We did a little interview with our designer and founder, Danni Arosemena to talk about why she started designing jewelry, what keeps her motivated, and what advice she has for other women!
Tell us about yourself and why you started designing jewelry!
My name is Danni and I am the designer and founder of Zephyr Grey. I’m a Mama to a beautiful (and wild!) 3 year old daughter named Luciana Grey. I studied Photography in college but have always been drawn to jewelry design and used it as a hobby throughout my early 20s. When my husband and I moved to Bali after we got married, it was then that I met a very talented friend who introduced me to my current manufacturer. I had the vision for the brand for a long time, but was never able to materialize it until I met the brilliant artisans in Bali. Not long after, I became pregnant with Luciana and we made the long trip back to Canada. Now we live in Toronto with our rescued Bali street dog, Frankie and we continue to work with the incredible team we have over there.
What do you love most about your job?
That I get to live out many different passions - jewelry design, photography and graphic design. But even more so, I love seeing my jewelry on other people. It truly warms my heart and makes everything worthwhile.
What is your passion in life?
My passion is thoughtful creation. In the past I have worked with other brands and seen my fair share of fashion tradeshows and I would be lying if I didn’t say that seeing the mass of physical production each season really scared me. On the other hand, I appreciate the joy of beautiful things - art, fashion, design, etc., and I do believe it brings positivity to our lives. That said, I am passionate about learning to create beautiful things in a more sustainable and thoughtful way. An aspect I love about jewelry is the material and how it can be melted down and repurposed.
What keeps you motivated in your career?
I aim to create beautiful jewelry that is versatile and timeless, but also empowering. I love the way wearing jewelry makes me feel and how it’s always the cherry on top of any outfit. I hope to make women feel empowered and beautiful and inspired.
How do you de-stress?
De-stressing with a toddler is a tough one. I always find peace in working out… or having a mezcal margarita… or two.
What took you way too long to figure out?
That self care is incredibly important. You cannot pour from an empty cup.
How do you maintain a positive attitude?
I read something recently that said something like, “staying positive doesn’t mean you have to be happy all of the time. It means that even on hard days you know that better ones are coming.” I really believe that. Nothing is forever - good nor bad, so truly embrace the good and know that the bad is only temporary.
What do you value in others?
I really value authenticity in others. I think the ability to take the time and space to listen to yourself, embrace yourself and live your truth in the face of everyone you cross is incredibly inspiring.
What advice would you give to girls and women?
You truly can do anything you want in life - if you are willing to work for it. Surround yourself with inspiring people and ask for help. People are always more willing to help than you think. What you don’t ask for, you don’t get. And no one gets to where they are by themselves. I used to think that every adult, in the "real world", had everything all figured out, but everyone you admire is “winging it” to a certain degree. That realization always relaxes me a little bit. I also had this false assumption that things should just “click”, and that isn’t necessarily true. Sometimes things feel harder than expected and couldn’t possibly be the way other people do things, but it is. Behind every bit of success is a lot of hard, un-glamourous work. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it.
